1997 kam Brandl erstmals mit Kenias Küste in Kontakt, 2014 zog er nach Afrika. Als er an der Südküste Kenias ankam, fühlte er sich überwältigt von der schieren Erhabenheit der Elemente – Luft, Wasser, Erde oder: Himmel, Horizont und der Boden unter den Füßen. Es entstand der Wunsch zu malen sowie die Absicht, Form und Gefühl zu trennen.

Nach einem experimentellen Prozess, bei dem er Hunderte von Fotografien machte, gelang es Brandl schließlich, sein Verlangen auf Fotopapier festzuhalten, indem er Fotos der drei Elemente gleichzeitig verwendete. So wie ein Maler Farbschichten auf eine Leinwand aufträgt, schichtet auch Brandl fotografische Elemente auf sein (digitales) Fotopapier – und hält so jedes Element in der Schwebe.

Brandl first came in contact with Kenya’s coast in 1997, in 2014 he moved more permanently to Africa. When he arrived on the south coast of Kenya, he felt overwhelmed by the sheer grandeur of the elements – air, water, earth, or: sky, horizon and the ground beneath your feet. The desire to paint arose, as well as the intention to separate form from feeling.

After an experimental process, where he took hundreds of photographs, Brandl finally succeeded in capturing his desire on photographic paper by using photos of the three elements simultaneously. Just like a painter adds layers of colours to a canvas Brandl, too, layered photographic elements onto his (digital) photographic paper – thus keeping each element in limbo.
